Han Training Goals
Handsome Han is a very smart and sweet ~ 1 yr old pup. He is friendly and affectionate when you have gained his trust. He is food-motivated, eager to please and learns quickly. He got along with our resident 9 yr old female shepherd. He ignored our cat in the house, but would need more training and supervision to be sure of their safety.
He walks easily on a leash. A harness with two points of attachment- one on the back and front for balance works very well with him. Since he is a growing, larger dog this system is a gentle way of teaching him calm walking and keeping him under control.
He is learning how to soothe himself when left alone and/or contained with food puzzles like a snuffle mat, wobbler, lick mat & Kongs to help him both cope with stress, and exercise his active mind. I fed him in food puzzles because he gobbles his food and it doesn’t get digested. Using his daily kibble for training is also how he gets his daily ration of food. I measure out the 2 cups for the day in a bowl and use to train or food puzzles. I do use the food bowl to train impulse control.
He is being crate trained. He is housetrained to go outside with no accidents inside so far. He can be calm and lie at your feet, too.
He won’t be Solo long as he is charming and loves your company. His nose is practically table level, so he has to be supervised in the kitchen. He is making great progress lying down when we eat at the table. He will counter surf and chew through dog food bags if he finds them! How he is learning to be free in the home is by using the house line leash to prevent him from wandering. He usually will then lie down until you get up.
There is this training exercise also to practice: the relaxation protocol at least 3 times a day in different rooms of the house. Again, use a regular daily ration of food for training to avoid stomach problems from too many treats.
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
The entire biography of this dog is based solely upon our volunteers' experiences with the dog. The dog's age and weight are estimates, and statements about the health, temperament, training, and ability to get along with other animals, children, cats and other dogs, are estimated solely based on our volunteer's experiences with this dog. Your experiences with this dog may be quite different than those of our volunteers.
