Kate continues to improve. Her mange is under control and her coat is growing back nicely. She is gaining weight and enjoying home life.
Kate has gained about 3.5 lbs. However, the vet said not to expect a lot of weight gain because she isn’t moving around that much and she has so much going on with her health. She is growing fur and is coming along well with her mange.
I know Kate’s story has touched many hearts. Your concern is much appreciated.
She is a sweet girl, and will be quite a character when she recovers a bit. The vet did a preliminary assessment of her condition; Kate is severely underweight, has demodex mange with a secondary skin infection. As well, she is heartworm positive. Due to her fragile condition; the veterinarian did not take extensive x-rays which would have required sedation. Preliminary information indicated that her leg/hip issue is not due to hip dysplasia but some other type of trauma. After Kate puts on some weight and is stronger, a complete set of x-rays will be taken to see what treatment may be needed to repair the injury.
Currently Kate is being treated for mange, given high quality meals and is enjoying being part of a pack. She can always find the energy to wag her hairless whip of a tail; it’s wonderful to see her look up at you and seem pretty happy and content. Life is only going to get better for this girl!

Kate is a 1 year old Purebred German Shepherd who was seized by local law enforcement in a nearby town; cruelty charges are pending against the former owner. She was fed 1/4 cup of food and 3 eggshells a DAY her entire life. She also has mange and the secondary skin infection that usually goes with it. Her rear left leg is injured as well, and will require treatment after she gains some much needed weight. In spite of all of this, Katrina is a sweet, loving girl who just wants to be in your lap. She takes food gently from human hands, and even lets people put their hands in her food bowl and mouth.
Can you find it in your heart to help us at Austin German Shepherd Rescue give this girl a second chance at a good life?
NOTE: In our experience many German Shepherd Dogs are very good with kids. In our bios, we may provide information on our experience with a particular dog and children. However AGSDR discourages ALL unsupervised animal/child interaction. Children should be supervised at all times when they interact with ANY animal, whether it is a horse, dog, cat, bunny, lizard, or any other species. Even loving household pets can have a grumpy day, or otherwise get tired of a child's attention, so proper supervision is essential for the well being of any child and any pet.
